This event has ended.

Churyo Sato often commented that the very foundation of sculpture is figurative study. For Sato such studies are a practice of internalizing the subject, taking it apart and re-constructing it. Hearing in his early years that Modigliani produced 100 sketches a day, Sato also felt compelled to take on such a challenge and from that time figurative studies have become an important part of his practice. It was this mentality that would stay with him throughout his life, to such an extent that he brought a sketch book with him everywhere he went, continuously sketching what he found before him, repeating the same motifs from multiple angles and always discovering a new aspect. He claimed that this practice was a form of exercise for the eye and for the mind and he has buried within each of his works this very depth of thinking and seeing, drawn out here through a collection of 49 sketches and bronze works.
