The Phoenix Hall of Byodo-in Temple, a World Heritage Site in the Uji region of Kyoto, is home to some of the oldest and largest dragon head tiles in Japan. The tiles have been taken down for the first time in 60 years, while the temple is undergoing repairs, to be put on display to the public. The dragon is of great significance as a symbol of fertility and for spreading Buddhist Law, so it is no surprise that its images adorn many temples. particular significance to Byodoin, as legend has it that the founder of the temple, Fujiwara no Yorimichi, was incarnated as a Dragon God that continues to protect it. In addition, other tiles including of Shishi lions, Oni demons, and a pair of phoenixes (the latter designated National Treasures) will be on display.
