This event has ended.

This exhibition explores the history of Yae Niijima, the heroine of NHK’s annual period drama for 2013, “Yae no Sakura.”
Born to a weapons maker in the Aizu Domain, Yae Niijima took up arms alongside her male comrades during the Boshin War. After the Meiji Restoration, she moved to Kyoto, working as a school teacher, then as a military nurse during the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese Wars that followed. This exhibition presents various documents dating from the era of Yae Niijima and items associated with her, illustrating the struggles of ordinary people following a series of wars. The exhibition also tries to convey a positive message for reconstruction in East Japan from the earthquake and tsunami disaster of 2011.
