Fushimi dolls, originally made using the soil surrounding Fushimi Inari Shrine in South Kyoto, are presumed the oldest clay dolls in Japan, dating back to the time of the 11th Emperor Suinin. Today, Fushimi dolls remain extremely popular, and over 2000 different varieties exist. On display in this exhibition are pieces from the collections of the Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts and Tanka, the oldest maker of Fushimi dolls today.
