The Crowds of Ise Shrine’s Deity Transfer Ceremony

“For holiness, everyone has pushed others in the crowd. The Shrine Transfer!”

Inspired by these words of a Basho poem, this exhibition presents works portraying the ancient and unchanging Japanese customs of visiting Ise Shrine and observing the transfer of its deity. There will also be lectures discussing the displayed works, the unbroken tradition of the shrine transfer and the Japanese mentality behind it, the impressions of foreign visitors to the shrine, and a tour of its outer grounds.
