The Art and Ceremony of Pure Land Buddhism
Ryukoku Museum
This event has ended.
In the Heian Period, believers in Pure Land Buddhism on their death bed would await Raigo: the coming of the Amida Buddha and his bodhisattvas to take them to the Western Paradise. Raigo would be depicted in paintings and statues and even enacted by priests in a special ceremony known as mukaeko or nerikuyo. This exhibition features important works of Buddhist sculpture and art related to this ceremony.
