This event has ended.

Drawing from the Osaka 20th Century Art Collection this exhibition brings fresh light on the career of Chiyu Uemae whose meeting with Jiro Yoshihara in 1953 acted as a catalyst to his engagement with the avant-garde movement of Gutai, which he actively contributed to while holding down the day job of a crane operator. After the dispersal of the Gutai group, Uemae took up needle and thread in place of the brush and began to create “embroidered” works.
He employed a great range of techniques and materials yet these were all brought together by his particular attitude to art production, with its very layering of time having the power to overwhelm. As the work of Gutai has become increasingly reappraised in recent years this exhibition also allows a reexamination of Chiyu Uemae’s contribution to the Japanese art scene, with a review of his early abstract work up to the print works produced in the 2000’s, also accompanied by an exhibition of work from the Gutai artists.
