As environmental issues such as climate change and other problems affect not only humans but all life forms, we face the question of “How to live?” on a global scale. Encompassing architecture, urban planning, and interior and exterior design, the field of space design addresses basic everyday human activities. One of space design’s objectives in this era is creating “a micro climate in a micro biosphere.” Toshiro Ikegami has been researching and practicing space design for more than 30 years, drawing on the knowledge of people working in a variety of fields and disciplines. His work has explored three main themes: 1) What can we learn from the past?, 2) What are the possibilities for future humans in space?, and 3) What can be done now to survive as environmental problems worsen, making it untenable for all life forms to inhabit the earth? Looking objectively at the specific activities of space design as practiced in its various forms by Toshiro Ikegami and his associates, this exhibition considers the possibilities of “dwelling.”
