This event has ended.

The Saio was an unmarried female relative of the emperor sent to serve as the High Priestess at Ise Shrine. It is believed that the first was the daughter of Emperor Sujin, Princess Oku-no-himemiko. This exhibition explores the origins of the Saio tradition and their residence, the Saiku, through rare archaeological and historical materials and artefacts, some never before shown to the public.
