This event has ended.

Nearly 200 selected masterpieces of fine and applied arts produced after the late modern period. All of the works are housed at the Imperial Household Agency’s Sannomaru Shozokan (Museum of the Imperial Collections), which was established in 1993 when generations of Imperial collections were donated to the Japanese government. Categorized into 6 chapters, masterpieces including Nihonga paintings by Yokoyama Taikan (1868-1958) and Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942), oil paintings by Takahashi Yuichi (1828-1894), sculptures by Takamura Koun (1852-1934), cloisonné works by Namikawa Yasuyuki (1845-1927), and metal works by Unno Shomin (1844-1915) are displayed. These masterpieces also include furnishings that once adorned the Meiji Palace (completed in 1888), works commissioned by emperors, purchases by the imperial family at expositions, presents and gifts from various quarters on auspicious occasions such as enthronement ceremonies, implements used at such ceremonies, and imperial portraits. Passed down from the Meiji, Taisho and Showa periods, these works represent the pinnacle of modern Japanese fine and applied arts.

His Majesty the Emperor will celebrate his 80th birthday this December, an occasion which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the museum and the 20th anniversary of the Imperial Household Agency’s Sannomaru Shozokan. Held as one of several commemorative events at a number of museums, this exhibition is the first to bring together such a sublime collection of resplendent masterpieces, which shine in the history of modern Japanese art. This exhibition presents a rare opportunity to observe the quintessence of modern Japanese arts and crafts, which have been nurtured and preserved by the Imperial Household in the city of Kyoto.
