The Courtesan - Beautiful Women in Kamigata Ukiyo-e Prints
Kamigata Ukiyoe Museum - Museum of Osaka Prints
This event has ended.
Exhibition of Ukiyo-e (floating world) prints from the Kamigata (Osaka and Kansai) region dating to the Edo Period (1603-1868). The most favored subject in Kamigata Ukiyo-e were kabuki actors, who were entirely male. As a result, many of these prints don’t depict women, but actors in the onna-gata (woman) role, particularly that of the oiran, or high-class courtesan. The prints on display give an insight into the world of kabuki theatre: the luxurious costumes, hair and makeup; and the aesthetic ideals of the period.
