Painters Who Lived in Art— Nature in Nihonga Paintings and People in Western Paintings

This exhibition, the second to open in 2013 introducing the works of the museum’s collection, displays around 50 Nihonga and Western-style paintings, including works held in the collection since the museum’s opening. Nihonga painters include prewar and post-war masters such as Seison Maeda, Yuki Ogura, Kyujin Yamamoto, Kai Higashiyama, Tatsuo Takayama, and Genso Okuda. Their works pursued both tradition and innovation, representing the beauty found in single moments of nature through colorful expression and skillful technique, leading viewers through quiet yet richly lyrical worlds of snow, moons, and flowers. Meanwhile, Western-style works in the collection by Japanese and foreign painters focus on people as their subjects. These works include female figures drawn with purity and elegance by Takeji Fujishima, Ryohei Koiso, and Tadahiko Nakayama, uniquely curved lines and color tones by Seiji Togo, and deeply expressed love by artists such as Pierre August Renoir, Marie Laurencin, Marc Chagall. Humans’ relationship with nature is another theme expressed in these works, notably, Yoshihiro Amitani’s paintings that strive to capture the essence of humanity in their examinations of life. This exhibition allows viewers to become absorbed in the gazes of these artists, taking in their reverence for the strength and sublimity of the soul and the odes to humanity found in their works.
