This event has ended.

The Boshin War took place in 1868-9 between the forces of the Tokugawa shogunate and imperial loyalists, of whom the latter successfully restored political power to the court. This exhibition explores this brutal civil war that determined the fate of modern Japan, with a focus on the Aizu domain (which comprised of a part of present-day Fukushima Prefecture). Aizu samurai, governed by stringent warrior code, were renowned for their superior martial skills. They made up the majority of the troops who fought for the shogunate in the Boshin War, and suffered horrendous defeat against the relatively small, but better equipped, Satsuma and Choshu forces. Documents and other rare articles from the time will be on display, as well as those related to Niijima Yae, the female warrior from Aizu who is also the centre of this year’s NHK period drama.
