The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama

poster for “Material and Art”

This event has ended.

In the majority of cases art work consists of its materials, sculpture is formed from wood, stone, metal etc., a painting is formed of pigment and canvas for example, raw materials are taken and processed by the human hand into art. And yet when we come to look upon art works we often forget their very materiality. Art is often defined as the working of human imagination and technical skill and yet this raises the question of the importance of the material itself. This exhibition pursues such a question, examining how we might define our relationship with materiality and how it can be brought to the forefront of artistic expression through a body of work from the museum collection.
