From the end of the Meiji period to the beginning of the Showa period, modern urban lifestyles flourished as well as new sense of independence among women. A new movement known as the “Modan Gaaru” (modern girl) came into being through media such as women’s schools and magazines.
This special exhibition features works by Hyogo-born artist Katsudi Matsumoto, who was a pioneer of lyrical painting, children’s painting, and manga at the height of “Girl” culture, with a focus on his works from the beginning of the Showa period. Through his works, this exhibition explores the origins of one of the major movements in contemporary Japanese culture.
