Satoru Tamura “Love Machine”

This event has ended.

On display are several pieces from Tamura’s “Machine” series on the theme of love in time for Valentine’s Day. The main piece is Tamura’s “Ai Machine,” which was exhibited at Aichi Art Triennale 2013. The Japanese kanji character for “love” is pronounced “ai.” Therefore, the machine represents love, as well as the “Ai” in Aichi Prefecture. Some of Tamura’s other machines are also exhibited, including “Love Machine” and several “Heart Machines.”

Tamura’s creations are based on concepts that become detached from their original meanings. The absence of meaning is the concept behind his work, and the mechanical nature of his creations destroys any meanings associated with them. They simply move as machines. The theme of “love” stands in contrast to the machines, which are strong, cold, and mechanical objects.

The final day of the exhibition will be Valentine’s Day, and Tezukayama Gallery invites everyone to join them in celebrating love in the New Year. Tamura’s “Osaka Machine,” featured in Osaka Canvas in 2011, will be exhibited in a space near the Osaka Creative Centre (formerly a Namura shipyard) at the same time as the gallery exhibition. Chishima Real Estate has kindly offered to permanently exhibit “Osaka Machine,” for which the gallery offers its thanks for their cooperation and support.
