The Bushido of Aizu: Aizu Domain and the Shinsengumi

An exhibition that looks at the tumultuous Bakumatsu (Late Edo) period, with a focus on Matsudaira Katamori, the daimyo of Aizu domain. Matsudaira was appointed Kyoto Military Commissioner by the shogunate to keep order in the city being taken over by Sonno Joi militants who were pro-Emperor and against the opening of Japan to the West; and led the notorious Shinsengumi special police force.
