This year marks the Shikinen Sengu, when Japan’s most important Shinto Shrine, Ise Jingu, will be reconstructed — an event that occurs only once in twenty years. It is customary for Japanese to pick up a souvenir when going to visit a renowned temple or shrine, and Ise Shrine is no exception. This exhibition will showcase what Ise Shrine is offering to visitors during this special time in terms of souvenirs and memorabilia, with accompanying background on the craftsman who made them, the history of the shrine and of the Shikinen Sengu custom.
