The Beauty of Nara Picture Books and Scrolls

Higashi Osaka Citizens Art Center

poster for The Beauty of Nara Picture Books and Scrolls

This event has ended.

Nara Ehon (Picture Books) and Emaki (Picture scrolls) were produced from the end of the Muromachi Period until the middle of the Edo Period. These short illustrated manuscripts are comparable in importance to Ukiyo-e prints that became wildly popular in the latter half of the Edo Period. These subtly-painted works include those made by individuals and lavish pieces commissioned by aristocratic houses.
This exhibition is part of a Picture Book Project at Keio University, which is working to digitalize and make Nara Ehon and Emaki accessible online.
