Exhibitions of Akihito Takuma’s “Lines of Flight” series, which explores the relationship between French philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s works and painting, are held simultaneously at three Kansai art venues: Gakei Gimlet, Institut Français du Japon Kansai (Kyoto), and Yoshiaki Inoue Gallery (Osaka). Deleuze’s philosophy had a profound impact upon Takuma, who made his debut as an artist with “Generative Change” in 1992, followed by the conceptual series “Behavioral Expression Paintings. “Lines of Flight,” which Takuma has been working on since 2004, has become his major body of work. Paintings displayed at this exhibition include works two-meters wide and “No. 364,” which features brushstrokes extending horizontally for more than three meters.
Takuma is now based in Kanto, but Kansai remains important to him, as he lived in the area for 16 years after graduating from Shiga University’s Graduate School of Art Education. This exhibition and the one at Institut Français du Japon Kansai exhibition will focus on large works on display for the first time, and the Yoshiaki Inoue Gallery will present representative works, including pieces from 2013. The three galleries will show a total of 37 paintings. There will also be a lecture and discussion on Deleuze by Takuma and Wako University professor Toshiya Ueno at the Institut Français du Japon Kansai.
