Insho Domoto, who worked in a variety of styles in Kyoto during the Taisho and Showa periods, created his own artistic world by painting every subject from people, flowers and birds, landscapes, Shinto and Buddhist deities, and even abstracts throughout his artistic career of 60 years. In this current exhibition are a selection of Insho’s paintings of flowers, birds and animals, from the gallery’s extensive archive of his work. In these images a number of characteristic points of Insho’s skills as a painter can be seen, such the beautiful way he depicts flowers in gentle colors, the delicate brushwork he uses to recreate the fur of rabbits and squirrels, and the dramatic energy with which he depicts an eagle with its wings outspread.
