This exhibition traces the history of Osaka’s Temma district. Once the site of a riverside market, Temma flourished under the influence of merchants in the Edo era and became a popular amusement site with rakugo and puppet theatre performances. To this day it remains the home of Temmangu Shrine’s magnificent annual Tenjin Matsuri. This exhibition recreates the festival’s atmosphere with festival dolls and boat-shaped floats (designated as Cultural Assets by the Osaka government). Visitors can also appreciate paintings of famous Temma locations, traditional crafts by local artisans, and other historical documents owned by veteran businesses. Also introduced is Temma District Hope Zone, a joint project between the Osaka government and local residents aimed at building an appealing community.
