“Gifts of the Past - Calligraphy and Painting Inspired by Uji”
Byodoin Temple Museum Hoshokan
This event has ended.
Behind the rich advancements of “Westernization” during the Meiji period is hidden a disturbing obliteration of many Buddhist statues and cultural artifacts in the rise of an anti-Buddhist movement. In response to this the Meiji government established a law to protect historic temples, under which the Hououdo was designated as a heritage building and between 1902-1907 underwent major renovations. As the temple again enters a stage of repair a special exhibition is held in celebration of the historic cultural “gifts” which have been inspired by the landscapes of Uji.
