Born in Kameoka, Kyoto, Okyo Maruyama(1733-95) was a disciple of Yutei Ishida and became known for his emphasis on realism in the early modern era, gaining great popularity amongst the public with his distinct style, coming to establish the Maruyama School of painting, which was to have a resounding impact on the world of nihonga. This exhibition draws major works of Okyo from the museum collection, accompanied by other examples from the Maruyama Shijo School, and the subsequent Hara School and Mori School, with a focus upon the motifs of peacocks and carp.
