Makoto Ishii Exhibition
Art Space Niji
This event has ended.
To Makoto Ishii, art is a clump of blood. It is raw life, and the mark of having lived. While his works remain rooted in ideas about life and death, in recent years they have featured the words “flower” and “earth”. The life associated with earth provides us living things with an enormous energy that is an intrinsic part of the artist’s soul. Without earth, there would be no flowers (i.e. life). The currently alive exist as reincarnations nourished by abundances of the soul and blood. If death is our fate, the artist wants to return richly to the earth. For this reason, he paints the word “life” while mulling its various meanings on a daily basis. To many, his works go beyond these notions of life and death to evoke the beauty of the human act of living.
