In an exhibition reflecting upon 100 years of Western art the foundations of Japanese art today may be clearly discerned within the model of Western Art which emerged in the late 19th Century, with Western principles of art becominng the basis of art across the world. Western academicism and culture rode a global wave, with a significant role played by colonialism, and yet it was not a mere case of enforcing Western culture upon that of others, rather we find an interesting fusion taking place with established creative practices of each country and region, to form something which came to emerge of its own energy. Split over 5 sections this exhibition re-examines the progression of art over a century. With Section 1 highlighting the central role of Paris the “City of Art” in fostering a new generation of artists at the turn of the century including Japanese artists Yuzo Saeki and Léonard Foujita. Section 2 traces the development of art in Europe after WWII with a sudden expansion of expression and very conception of art.Section 3 observes the emergence of abstract expressionism, minimalism and pop art in tandem with rapid economic development in the USA. Section 4 examines the role of photography in formulating our notions of the image and
Section 5 highlights the current form of cotemporary art as witnessed across the end of the 20th Century up to this day. Follow a journey through 100 years and rediscover the currents which have come to form the art of today.
