The internationally renowned print maker Masuo Ikeda was born in former Manchuria in 1934 and at the end of the war moved with his family to Nagano prefecture. On the brink of adulthood he came to Tokyo and attempted to join Tokyo University of the Arts, but failed the examination, and after first grieving this lost opportunity set out on becoming a printmaker. From that moment he enjoyed a strong of successes being selected for the International Print Biennale and winning numerous awards both in Japan and overseas. He was ready to try his hand at an array of genres including film making and novel writing, coming to focus his attention on ceramics in his 50s and suddenly passing away at the early age of 63. To mark 80 years since Ikeda’s birth this exhibition gathers prints, ceramics and writing from the collection of violinist Yoko Sato’s collection, along with that of the museum, including the renowned Heart Sutra Series, revealing the wide expanse of Ikeda’s artistic practice.
