Collection/Connection— The New Form Woven Through Mayan Textiles
Kyoto City University of Arts Gallery @KCUA
This event has ended.
Presenting some 80 pieces from a collection of Central and South American textiles, as well as 20 works by students researching the collection. The students were inspired by the folk clothing and everyday cloth materials of the Mayans of the Andes Mountains to create new textiles in their own styles. On display are women’s blouses and skirts, headdresses, men’s ponchos, and other articles of clothing donated to the university by Shigeno Ishihara, who began collecting Central and South American textiles in the 1970s. These important cultural artifacts with direct ties to people’s lives form a “living archive” allowing us to flexibly search for new ways to live.
