The word “neither” often appears on questionnaires, a convenient phrase which indicates a possibility beyond mere yes and no, an ambivalence which resists a concrete shape, and perhaps reflects a sensibility which may be said to be rather Japanese. Here Yoshino Hirota pursues this position of the inbetween, attempting to capture a sense that can not be distilled in words.
