The Sengu Ceremony Continues - Transferring the Shrines
Jingu Museum
This event has ended.
Japanese people have worshipped at Jingu Shrine for two thousand years. The main sanctuary buildings are built in Japan’s oldest architectural style, “Yuiitsu shinmei-zukuri,” a style typical in the Mie region. These shrines are re-constructed at adjacent alternate sites every twenty years. Sacred treasures and apparel belonging to the Shrine are also renewed at this time. This ceremonial system is called the “Shikinen Sengu” and includes various ceremonies related to rebuilding the shrines and transferring the deities from the old to the new buildings. This exhibition presents an opportunity to gather fruitful insight into the history and preparations surrounding the Sengu tradition.
