The museum was first founded in 1973 with the donation of the craft collection of nihonga artist and researcher Kanpoh Yoshikawa, and furthered its support for the arts of Nara through the collections of Kaichi Ohbashi and Tetsuji Yura, coming to acquire the works of masters such as Shoen Uemura, Kenkichi Tomimoto and Ikko Tanaka and wide array of artists associated with the region, coming to form today a collection of over 4000 artifacts. This exhibition brings together 120 works from across the fields of nihonga, oil painting, print making, sculpture, craft and design, tracing 100 years of art history. Also showing at the same time in the first floor gallery is a poster exhibition also celebrating years of the museum.
