Exhibitions of Akihito Takuma’s “Lines of Flight” series, which explores the relationship between French philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s works and painting, are held simultaneously at three Kansai art venues: Gakei Gimlet, Institut Français du Japon Kansai (Kyoto), and Yoshiaki Inoue Gallery (Osaka). Deleuze’s philosophy had a profound impact upon Takuma, who made his debut as an artist with “Generative Change” in 1992, followed by the conceptual series “Behavioral Expression Paintings. “Lines of Flight,” which he has been working on since 2004, has become his major body of work. Displayed paintings include works two-meters wide and “No. 364,” which features brushstrokes that extend horizontally for more than three meters.

Although now based in Kanto, Kansai remains important to Takuma, who lived in the area for 16 years after graduating from Shiga University’s Graduate School of Art Education. The Institut Français du Japon Kansai and Gakei Gimlet exhibitions will focus on large works on display for the first time, and this show will feature representative works, including pieces from 2013. The three galleries will present a total of 37 paintings. There will also be a lecture and discussion on Deleuze by Takuma and Wako University professor Toshiya Ueno at the Institut Français du Japon Kansai.
