Looking East: Western Artists and the Allure of Japan
Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art
This event has ended.
Japonism, first used in the late 19th Century, is the influence of Japanese art, fashion, and aesthetics on Western culture. The term is used particularly to refer to Japanese influence on European art, especially in impressionism. Ukiyo-e, Japanese wood-block prints, became a source of inspiration for many European impressionist painters, including Monet, whose “La Japonaise” painting was a great reference to Japanese art.
Approximately 150 pieces, including paintings, prints, sketches, photographs, and crafts, have been carefully selected from the collection at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
