Visitors to shrines in Japan are welcomed by statues of lion-like mythical beasts— the horned komainu and the hornless shishi. Lions are not native to Japan, so how did they come to guard its gods? Introducing some of the most famous shishi and komainu, this exhibition explores how they and other and other horned and mythical creatures with origins in ancient Egypt, western and central Asia, and China came to Japan and developed their own unique traits here.
