Born in a nature-surrounded area of Kyoto in 1957, Iwao Shinno grew up learning about the beauty of form. He studied ceramics in university and became a full-fledged artist through training at ceramics and technology institutes in Kyoto. His works, which have been featured in exhibitions of traditional Japanese crafts, have won him much acclaim. In 2012 he was awarded the Imperial Purple Ribbon Medal for merit in the arts. Shinno currently works at Kyoto City University of Arts teaching the next generation of ceramicists. This exhibition presents around 60 of his works, including jars, pots, vases, incense burners, tea cups, and water pitchers. These creations were inspired by water as the root of all life.
