Wu Yih-Han “In Between”
Yoshiaki Inoue Gallery
This event has ended.
An important role of portrait paintings in history was to keep records of people. Particular features such as appearance, posture, dress, and gestures, could be used as a reference to an individual’s character and their life. However, a portrait was not solely objective, and the artists’ individual viewpoint or interest was reflected in the painting.
Since the invention of the camera, present-day portraiture does not take on this documentary role. However, contemporary artists still bring their subjectivity and individual interpretations to their work. In this 21st Century, Wu Yih-Han’s forward-thinking works seek to accept history and not deny the past.
