This event has ended.

Reflecting on the pursuit of beauty by women through the ages this exhibition showcases 120 examples of elegantly portrayed women of Ukiyo-e, selected from the collection of the Kataoka family. Masters of ukiyo-e, including Yutaka Utagawa, Eisen Keisai, and Kuniyoshi Utagawa have come to define the Edo sense of beauty through their renderings of female charm and through their work we may peer into the common lives and habits of these women, chasing fireflies, riding upon boats, applying make up before the mirror, with female ideals also embodied in such historic figures as Lady Tokiwa or the court dancer Giou. Here we may observe not merely an innate physical beauty, but a beauty drawn out by their settings and surrounding characters and further developed by the emergence of new colors in ukiyo-e including Berlin blue, revealing the rich aesthetic of common women of the Edo period.
