Sakurako Yamabe “Categorize of the World”

This event has ended.
Composed of 47 small works featuring a broken-up version of the Japanese archipelago, this map-themed exhibition incorporates elements of installation art and digs deeply into the concept of borders and the senses of distance between oneself and others. These “maps” of Japan can be understood as a grouping of human-made borders and symbols of categorization. Yamabe cut out the outlines of the prefectures and cities familiar to Japanese people and observed them from various angles before distorting them through the use of color and reconstructing them into “categorized things”, which are not maps.
