Makoto Ofune’s Japanese-style paintings have won both domestic and international acclaim at shows including an exhibition at Kyoto’s Kamigamo Shrine and Switzerland’s Art Basel last year. Using traditional Japanese mineral pigments and meteorite pieces in his works, Ofune creates scenery that seems to flow out from the exhibit space and arouses viewers’ somatic perceptions. We feel ourselves wandering through outer space, drawn into the depths of the sea, and enveloped in beautiful landscapes we have never before experienced. Ofune’s works reflect the universe, where life and spirit connect freely and internal images overlap with each other. This is his first solo exhibition in Hyogo.
