poster for Shoko Uemura Exhibition

This event has ended.

Shoko Uemura studied under Suisho Nishiyama upon entering the Kyoto City School of Painting in 1921. While at school, his work was accepted for the 3rd Teiten Exhibition, and he went on to play a major role in a number of government-sponsored exhibitions. However, he eventually abandoned his post as a judge for the Nitten (renamed from Teiten in 1947), which he thought had become complacent with its age-old traditions, and established the “Sozo Bijutsukyokai (Society for the Creation of Art)”. He took an active part in this association, reinventing Nihonga painting and imbuing paintings of birds and flowers with fresh perspectives and modern compositions while retaining the traditional sketching techniques of the Maruyama-Shijo school of painting. During this period he created masterpieces as such as “Peacock” and “Night Herons.” Uemura was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit for his distinguished work in 1959. This exhibition features some 70 representative paintings and sketches from his early to late years, tracing the career of this outstanding painter.
