20th Century French Painting

Paramita Museum

This event has ended.

The Impressionist paintings of France in the late 19th century upturned the sensibilities that had prevailed in Western paining until that point, opening the door to a new age. Movements such as Fauvism and Cubism that would follow with the dawn of the 20th century and form the basis for contemporary art, liberating artists from the burden of reproducing nature, also came out of France. Artists from around France and the world gathered in the lively atmosphere of Paris to pursue new forms of expression. Called the École de Paris, these artists produced outstanding and highly original works. This exhibition tracing the history of 20th century French painting beginning with Fauvism presents some 60 works from the Yamagata Museum of Art’s Hattori Collection. Works by Picasso, Chagall, and other contemporary French masters, as well as 18 photographs of the studios used by some of the featured artist by the photographer Sanjiro Minamikawa are on display.
