“First Impressions”
Be-Kyoto
This event has ended.
Claiming to approach painting in a slightly unorthodox way, Robert Wallace refers to Sabro Hasegawa’s suggestion that paintings are “controlled accidents”, formed as naturally as rocks or grass when describing his work, letting paintings paint themselves, without manipulation. Employing the Zen concepts of wu-hsin and wu-nien, or “no-mind” and “no-thought” the artist is unaware of what he is painting until he is absorbed in this process. Here the artist represents his first impressions of Japan, and particularly Kyoto through an embrace of the accidents and mistakes of improvisation.
