For a particular generation the 4 frame manga of Asahi Shimbun newspaper brings to mind images of Machiko Hasekawa’s “Sazae San” and Sanpei Sato’s “Fuji Santaro”, with the latter belonging to a slightly younger generation than the former. “Fuji Santaro” tells the story of salary man Santaro Fuji across both his work and home life, combining both genres of society and domestic set manga, bringing smiles to the faces of Asahi Shimbun readers for over 26 years with 8168 publications. Sanpei Sato not only created “Fuji Santaro” but is also well known for characters such as “Yuhi-kun” and “Aksakaze-kun” and has won numerous awards across his career for his work, which he still continues today at the age of 84. This exhibition celebrates the achievements of this manga master and his particular representation of the Showa era captured in his 4 frame filled with humor and satire.
