The Kobe-born manga artist and illustrator Seizo Watase, winner of the 1974 Shogakukan Big Comic Prize, released his first serial work “Otoko no Uta” (Men’s Songs) in the comic magazine “Shukkan Manga Times” in 1977. His 1983 love story series “Haato Kakuteru” (Heart Cocktail), which ran in the comic magazine “Shukkan Morning”, became a huge hit and was adapted as a short TV animation. Watase has also produced many works of cover art, corporate posters, cd jackets, and publications. His artwork is currently featured in the magazines “Morning” and “Sunday Mainichi”, and his “Anne wo Dakishimete— Muraoka Hanako Monogatari” (Embracing Anne— The Story of Hanako Muraoka), created in collaboration with Rie Muraoka, responsible for the NHK morning serial novel “Hannko to Anne” (Hanako and Anne), was published in March. Marking 40 years since Watase’s debut as an artist, this exhibition presents some 150 works spanning his career, including original illustrations, manuscripts, and prints. Representative works as well as new ones are on display.
