This event has ended.
Issei Otomo combines approaches in his painting, experimenting with canvas sizes, forms, and tools. Recently his work is characterized by an interest in oil paints as a material. Focusing on blending colors, he mixes hues until they appear almost black. Otomo says his motivation to paint is to hold onto admiration for nature. To make sure his works do not plunge into total blackness, he takes an extremely restrained approach to subtly blending colors on the canvas and pallet. This exhibition presents the results of this technique, exploring Otomo’s process up through the present. A series of paintings with purple as a base, plus three tri-color works of blue, red, and yellow are on display.
