This event has ended.

Knitting designer Naoko Shimoda became a sensation in the handicraft world in the 1980s with her “Hitotsume Kozo” and “Ficce Uomo” series of hand-knit works. She later traveled to New York, where she pursued folk art and antiques. After returning to Japan, she produced a book of her own knitting designs, “Keito Dama,” which won much acclaim. She was featured as a contemporary artist along with Keisuke Serizawa and Fukumi Shimura at the Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art’s 1993 exhibition “Gendai no Senshoku” (Contemporary Weaving and Dyeing). Her books on knitting published in 2005 and 2006 sold more than 10,000 copies and have attracted a wide range of fans. Encompass techniques including patchwork, embroidery, appliqué, knits, and sewing, her designs often incorporate antique lace, cloth, beads, felt, and other materials she has collected herself. She has also written a book on handmade bag-making. A woman of many talents unlike any other in the handicraft world, her creations extend beyond the genre into the realm of pop art. This exhibition presents some 350 examples of her work, from knitted items from early in her career to her trademark bags to small items, accessories, and more, including new and never-before-exhibited pieces. Boasting exquisite skill, vivid colors, and fine materials, her creations reaffirm the wonderfulness, fun, and importance of making things by hand. Come enjoy her charming world of handicrafts.
