Yae Niijima Revisited: The Bushido of Aizu
Ryozen Museum of History
This event has ended.
This show continues in the vein of last year’s popular exhibition about the life of Yae Niijima, a woman famous for bravely defending the city of Aizu with a spencer rifle in the Boshin War, remaining loyal to the Tokugawa shogunate until the very end of the Edo era, serving as a nurse in military conflicts, and advancing the union of the shogunate and the Imperial family. In addition to Niijima’s written correspondence with the Imperial family and her spencer rifle displayed at last year’s exhibition, this exhibition presents several new important documents, offering a fuller picture of her life.
