Commodore Perry arrived suddenly on the coast of Uraga with four steam-powered ships in June of 1853, confounding and causing a sensation among everyone in Japan from the Edo government to the common people. This exhibition considers the significance and the impact of these black ships with several documents displayed in public for the first time, including Important Cultural Properties.
