The Momoyama period brought an end to an age of conflict and rule passed from Nobunaga Oda to Hideyoshi Tokugawa and then Iesu Tokugawa, in 1603 the Edo shogunate was established and continued for 260 years until the restoration of imperial rule in 1867. The Momoyama period also saw a flourishing in the world of art, with wealthy merchants and farming families coming to enjoy a rich cultural life. Within the field of painting the era observed the emergence of numerous new schools including Rinpa and the Bujinga school, amongst the followers of the Kuno and Tosa schools, with the next generation distancing themselves from religious ceremony and coming to depict a wider variety of festivals and interests, capturing the scenes of town life alongside the worlds of nobles and intellectuals. This exhibition casts its eye across this vibrant period with an array of artifacts and works from leading artists of the time, including the public unveiling of recent acquisitions.
