This event has ended.

At the dawn of the Meiji era, people began using the term “Nihonga” (Japanese paintings) to distinguish these works from “Western” oil paintings. Japan’s artisanal painters became “Japanese artists.” Carrying on tradition while riding the waves of changing social norms, these artists sought out new expressions in various artistic adventures. These works reveal the unique styles of painting in the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras, as well as the originality of their artists.
